Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve never surfed before. Can I take a surf lesson?
Yes! Gecko Surf School lessons are for all levels, including complete beginners. Each 2-hour lesson starts on land with safety technique, paddling, and take-off, before you go into the water always accompanied by an instructor certified by the Portuguese Surfing Federation. Most of our students catch their first waves in the very first lesson.
What’s included in the surf lesson?
All lessons include a surfboard, wetsuit, insurance, and a certified instructor for 2 hours. You don’t need to bring your own equipment—we provide everything, suited to your size and level. The lesson covers ocean safety, paddling technique, how to stand up, and board control.
What should I bring to the lesson?
You only need swimwear (to wear under the wetsuit), a towel, sunscreen, and water. We take care of the rest: surfboard, wetsuit, and insurance are included in the price. We recommend arriving 10–15 minutes before the scheduled time so you can get changed calmly.
Do I need to know how to swim to take surf lessons?
Yes, you need to be able to swim and feel comfortable in the water. You don’t need to be an experienced swimmer—beginner lessons take place in shallow areas near the beach, always under the instructor’s supervision. If you’re unsure about your comfort level in the water, talk to us before booking.
From what age can children take surf lessons?
Children can take surf lessons from age 6. For younger kids, we recommend private or semi-private lessons, with the instructor’s exclusive attention.
What if the weather is bad or there are no waves?
If sea conditions aren’t safe, we’ll reschedule the lesson for another day at no extra cost. Alternatively, you can request a 100% refund up to 24 hours before the lesson starts. In Costa da Caparica, there are conditions for beginner lessons almost all year round—student safety always comes first.
Where is Gecko Surf School? Is there parking?
We’re at Praia de Santo António – Apoio 8, in Costa da Caparica, about 20 minutes from Lisbon. There is paid parking next to the beach. The meeting point is at our school on the beach—we’ll send the exact location in your booking confirmation.
How can I book a surf lesson?
You can book online in just a few clicks using the "Book" button on the website, with instant confirmation. You can also contact us via WhatsApp (+351 913 072 715) or email (info@geckosurfschool.com) for group bookings, packages, or any questions about schedules.
