- Why Costa da Caparica

The Best Spot in Portugal
to Learn to Surf

Not all beaches are equal for beginners. Costa da Caparica brings together the right conditions of surf, safety and accessibility — which is why this is where Lisbon locals come to learn to surf.

With 30 kilometres of sandy coastline, a sandy seabed, small and consistent waves, and lifeguards on duty throughout the bathing season, Caparica is technically the best beach in Portugal for taking your first steps in surfing. It's no coincidence — the majority of surf schools in the Lisbon area operate right here

The difference compared to other Portuguese beaches lies in the type of wave. Caparica receives consistent Atlantic swell, but the beach's exposure and seabed shape create gentler conditions than, for example, Nazaré or Supertubos. For those learning to surf, this means more time in the water practising and less time dealing with unpredictable seas.

30km

Ideal beach for beginners

Atlantic sandy coastline with consistent, manageable waves — gentle entry, no rocks, sandy seabed. Lifeguards on duty. The safest stretch of the Setúbal coast.

20min

Direto de Lisboa

Take the ferry from Cais do Sodré to Cacilhas or the bus from Praça de Espanha. No car needed. Most students are in the water less than an hour after leaving their hotel.

300+

Sunny days per year

Portugal's Atlantic coast has one of the best climates in Europe for surfing. The water stays above 16°C from May to November — no thick wetsuit needed in summer.

Year-round

Waves in every season

The Atlantic Ocean delivers consistent swell all year round. Autumn and winter bring bigger surf for progression. Spring and summer are ideal for those starting from scratch.

- Ideal beach for beginners

Best months for
surf lessons in Portugal

Every month has surfable waves in Portugal. What changes is the water temperature, crowd levels and wave size. The summer months (July, August and September) are ideal for all levels, with water temperatures between 16°C and 21°C. Spring (March, April and May) and October are great for beginners, with water between 16°C and 19°C. In winter (January, February, November and December), waves are bigger with colder temperatures ranging from 15°C to 18°C.

For tourists and visitors to Lisbon, June to September is the most popular window: stable weather. If you're coming specifically to take surf lessons in Portugal, July and August are peak season, but September combines still-warm water (20°C) with far fewer crowds on the beach.

For residents and those looking to progress quickly, October and November are our instructors' favourite months. The water stays above 17°C, the waves have more power and consistency than in summer, and the beaches are quiet. It's the time when progression happens fastest — fewer distractions, better learning conditions.

- Your Instructors

What a Gecko surf instructor actually does

Every lesson starts on land. The instructor explains the take-off, paddling technique and how to read a wave before you enter the water.

It's not just for beginners. Even those who have surfed before will work on fundamental errors that hold back progression: foot position on the board, where to look on the wave, take-off timing. These are the details most people teach themselves incorrectly — and that a certified instructor corrects in minutes, saving weeks of bad habits that are hard to undo.

They watch your position, not just your wave

Foot placement, weight distribution and arm position are corrected from the very first rep. Bad habits form quickly — a good instructor prevents them from the start.

Certified by the Portuguese Surf Federation

All Gecko instructors hold FPS certification. Safety protocols, first aid training and ocean knowledge are mandatory requirements.

Focused on your progression, not just the fun

Most students stand up on the board in their first lesson. Each session has a concrete goal — you will always know what you are working on.

How long does it take to learn to surf?

The honest answer: in your first 2-hour lesson you will already be catching your first waves on your feet. You won't be doing manoeuvres — but you will feel what it's really like to surf, and that's enough to know whether it's for you.

To feel comfortable in the water, choosing and positioning yourself on waves without help, you need 4 to 6 sessions. This is where most people go from "surviving the whitewater" to "actually surfing". The 4-lesson packages exist for exactly this reason: it's the minimum needed for real progression rather than starting from scratch every session.

To surf green waves — those still breaking, not the white water foam — you need consistent practice over several weeks or months, depending on how often you train and your physical fitness. There are no shortcuts, but there are ways to get there faster: private lessons, regular frequency and good instruction from the start.

Those who opt for private lessons progress on average twice as fast as in group lessons — because every correction is immediate, every wave is analysed and the programme adapts to your pace. If your available time for surfing is limited, private lessons are the investment that makes the most sense.

- Frequently Asked Questions

Before You Book

Never surfed before? Can I take a lesson?

Yes! Gecko Surf School lessons are for all levels, including complete beginners. Each 2-hour lesson starts on land covering safety techniques, paddling and take-off. Most students catch their first waves in their very first lesson.

Do I need to know how to swim to take surf lessons?

Yes, you do need to feel comfortable in the water. Beginner lessons take place in shallow, standing-depth water close to the shore, always under instructor supervision. Get in touch with us before booking.

What’s included in the surf lesson?

All lessons include a surfboard, wetsuit, insurance and a certified instructor, for 2 hours. You don't need to bring your own equipment — we provide everything, tailored to your size and level.

What should I bring to the lesson?

Just bring a swimsuit, towel, sunscreen and water. We recommend arriving 10 to 15 minutes before your scheduled time to get your equipment on comfortably.

What if the weather is bad or there are no waves?

If sea conditions are not suitable, we will contact you in advance to reschedule or issue a full refund. We monitor conditions daily and only run lessons when they are right for the level booked.

From what age can children take surf lessons?

Children can take surf lessons from age 6. For younger children we recommend private or semi-private lessons. Group lessons are great from age 10 onwards.

Posso ter aulas de surf em Lisboa?

Costa da Caparica is the closest surf beach to Lisbon — less than 20 minutes by bus or ferry from the city centre. There are no surf beaches within Lisbon itself, but Caparica is so accessible it is considered the capital's urban surf beach. You have a direct connection from Praça de Espanha (TST bus) or from Cais do Sodré via Cacilhas (ferry + bus). No car, no hassle.

What is the difference between a group and a private surf lesson?

In a group lesson (up to 6 students per instructor), you learn in a more social environment and the cost per person is lower — ideal for trying surfing for the first time or coming with friends and family. In a private lesson, the instructor is 100% focused on you: watching every wave you catch, correcting every mistake in real time and adapting the programme to your level and pace. The semi-private lesson (2 people) is the middle ground: more attention than in a group, more affordable than a private.
